A Return to Minnesota Fringe
In the spring, Minnesota Fringe Executive Director Dawn Bentley announced that 2021 would be her last season. At the end of the 28th Annual Fringe Festival, the final employee spotlight in the Daily Fringe newsletter announced her decision to remain in her position after all. We conducted a quick Q&A to help explain more about why:
You're back full time at the Fringe? Tell us more. This is easy: The mission. Minnesota Fringe connects adventurous artists with adventurous audiences by creating open, supportive forums for free and diverse artistic expression. Fringe is a "Big A" arts disruptor. Our stages are a laboratory for artistic experimentation. Our audiences encourage audacity. Our staff and volunteers are devoted. While I was briefly holding down two jobs this summer, I realized the Fringe was my place. It's where I belong. It's where I can put my values into action.
So, what's next at the Fringe? That's a good question! Over the past five years, the staff and I have endured major cultural shifts, overhauled nearly every internal process, survived a once-in-a-century pandemic, confronted economic frailty, and reinforced our relationships with a community that rallied around us in our time of greatest need. And now we're in a whole new time. There are massive changes yet to come for the Fringe and the theater field. I want to be part of helping carve out this new world order! The staff and board will be diving into planning. We want to hear your ideas. We want to share ours. Let's keep talking!
How can someone get involved?
We will be going through strategic planning this winter to evaluate our programs, explore new ways to support theater makers in Minnesota, and examine our efforts to improve inclusivity. There is room for folks to become involved in this process through membership on our board of directors, artist committee, or the Fringe with Benefits offering. All three groups will be integral to shaping the future of Minnesota Fringe, as we value the voices of our dedicated volunteers, artists, and patrons.
