Cast and Crew
Mark Peterson
Creator

Mark is a Los Angeles-based creator, director, performer and jack of all trades. He was a founding member of Circle Squared Collective, an LA based theatre company focused on creating devised works. Favorite devised credits include C2C productions of Embers and Smoke, and Curse of The Conquistador's Gold as well as Delirium, a mixed-reality production with Columbia College Chicago. Currently he is a choreographer with Sword Fights, Inc in Burbank, CA, and a director, props master, and award-winning acting coach at Arcadia High School.

Sarah Hensley
Creator

Sarah is a Chicago-based creative multihyphenate type. Sarah was thrilled to have her full length play, a mother should know, produced as a staged reading by Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble this past spring. Sarah loves developing new work; most recently, she's perfomed in staged readings of Basement History, by Ashley O'Neill and On Either Side of All the Late Unpleasantness, by KL. Other favorite roles include Diane in Sister Mary Explains it All for You with the Chevy Chase Players, and her performative triptych, Ma Belle Fielle, with Columbia College Chicago. Sarah is a mostly recovered lawyer, but still dabbles in actual innocence and post-conviction defense consultation because second-career artistry doesn't always pay the bills.

Holly Ness
Co-Stage Manager

Holly Ness is thrilled to work on this production of How to Escape Hell with Physical Lies as a Co-Stage Manager. They are a theater artist based in the Twin Cities who graduated with their B.A. in Theater from St. Olaf College in 2019 with a focus on stage management and acting. They recently performed in Headwaters Collective show Whatcha Thinkin'? at the Plymouth Theater and Dark Pony's Production of Would I Lie to You? at the Hive Collaborative. They recently stage managed Mistletoe and Mayhem with Just Us Theater and Stolen Focus at the Phoenix Theater.

Dora Starr Poulos
Co-Stage Manager
Dora Starr Poulos (she/her) is thrilled to be making her Minnesota Fringe debut with PhysicalLies! While this is her first Twin Cities credit, some of her favorite productions she stage managed include Cabaret and Blood at the Root at Case Western Reserve University, as well as The Magic Knight & Other Herbert Hits with Great Lakes Opperetta. Dora holds a B.A. in Theatre (Technical & Design) with a minor in Classics from Case Western Reserve University. She’d like to thank her family and boyfriend for their undying love and support as she hits the scene in Minneapolis!

About us

Sarah Hensley and Mark Peterson informally formed PhysicalLies shortly after receiving their M.F.A.s in European Devised Performance Practice at Columbia College Chicago in 2021. They began generating How to Escape Hell in the early spring of 2022, and have produced several work-in-progress performances. Minnesota Fringe marks the premiere of the show!

In 2024, Mark and Sarah created a YouTube channel (@PhysicalLies), where they produce and host PhysicalLies: Analyzed, a series of shorts and video essays about the theatre industry, and interviews with other theatre artists about their practice and vision for theatre's future. You can also find them on instagram @PhysicalLiesPublicized and on the tik tok @PhysicalLies (but we're old so we don't update that as often).

What's this Dramaturgy-on-Demand thing?

Looking for new ways to immerse audience members into our story without forcing participation, we kept coming back to the idea of making an X-Ray-like feature that allowed audiences to pause the show (a limited number of times) to learn more about the particular myth(s) supporting each scene. Fringe marks our first foray into this immersive experience and we're excited to see how it goes!

We're still noodling specifics, but we're leaning towards phone flashlights as the "pause" button.

Ugh, phones?!

Yes, phones. We are on a mission to bring audiences back to theatre. We know Minnesota Fringe has eager, awesome audiences, but, well, the same isn't true everywhere. We want theatre to feel less stuffy.

That said, we also hate that we live in an age where faces are more likely to be looking at screens than at other faces...AND we believe we need to meet people where they're at. So consider the phone flashlight your security blanket (and please remember to silence phone noises out of respect for your fellow audience members).

One more warning...

This play contains partial nudity.

Thank yous

We'd be remiss if we didn't thank our awesome workshop audiences, our friends, and our family for the feedback and support on earlier iterations of the show. Y'all rock!

We're also very grateful to our intrepid stage managers, Dora and Holly, who jumped on board to help us herd all the proverbial cats an experimental theatre piece contains.
