Company: The Blair Kitsch Project
Show: DIVINE/GYPSY
Venue: Barbara Barker Center for Dance
Ready or Not, Here Comes Divine!
Divine/Gypsy is a perfect tribute to both sources, and it was a perfect way to end my Fringe-going this year. The performers said at the end that they want this show to live beyond Fringe, and I really hope it does, too!
Company: Melancholics Anonymous
Show: Beanie Baby Divorce Play
Venue: Open Eye Theatre
5/5 Beanie Babies
Melancholics Anonymous does it again! Beanie Baby Divorce Play is another great fringe show from this reliably high quality and hilarious troupe, now with better stage effects than ever (I don't want to spoil, but let's just say the puppet magic moments are sick as in both awesome and twisted).
Company: The Other Jeannie Retelle
Show: Becoming My Mother: The Other Origin Story
Venue: HUGE Improv Theater
Touching, laugh out loud tribute to mother & child
The Other Jeannie Retelle gives you all you want out of a fabulous drag show--lip syncs, costume changes, camp references--plus personal stories from and about both mother and child. This show is a loving tribute to a mother (the original Jeannie), but it is also a lovely tribute to the self, reminding the audience of the power of who we come from to help us become who we are.
Company: Pretend Productions
Show: Daddy Issues
Venue: Phoenix Theater
No issues with Daddy Issues!
Masterfully staged, and wonderfully performed, structured, and written, Daddy Issues is surprisingly quite funny, in addition to being moving, emotional, and personal.
