Show: That Woman - The Monologue Show
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Stellar Performances

That Woman is beautifully written and superbly acted. I went for the inside stories of JFK's love life, which I got, but I received so much more: fascinating insights into 6 intriguing women. All actors gave superb performances. My favorite monologues where those of Mimi Beardsly Alford and Jackie O--Mimi because I didn't know much of her story and I appreciated the way she owned her story; and Jackie O because I've read a ton about her and this gave me new insight since she told her story through the lens of her relationship with her sister Lee. Bravo to all the women in this show and especially Molly Breen, the intern and director and co-creator.

Company: Jason Schommer
Show: A Material Boy Living In A Madonna World!
Venue: Strike Theater

Good Old Fashioned Queer Fun

I'm a gay child of the 80s who danced and screwed to Madonna. You don't have to love Madonna, have lived through the 80s are be gay, to love Jason Schommer and his giddy, joyous show of good old fashioned queer fun--not that new-fangled queer fun that leave me cold. I don't know what I'm saying, except to say, go see Jason's show and sit back and enjoy. He may inspire you, as he inspired me, to write your own show about your favorite female diva. Now I must dash and start writing my Joan Crawford show.

Company: Mike Fotis Productions
Show: The Camp Out
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Too Real without Real Drama

The show felt like real life but without enough drama or comedy to justify a show. The ensemble is excellent performers who play well off each other and inhabit their characters completely. I felt sorry for the character of Christine, not because she was dead and the reason this group of friends had gathered for a camping trip, but because the improv group didn't give the audience enough of a reason to care that she was dead. There were some good laughs and poignant moments, but not enough of either to make the show more than a well drawn realistic portrayal of some 40-year-olds camping.

Company: Martin Dockery
Show: Martin Dockery: TRUTH
Venue: Theatre in the Round

Best Christmas Story Ever!

Martin's three tales in Truth are not set during Christmas, but he decked the halls and covered them in tinsel with the best Christmas story I've ever heard. He's a riveting comedic storyteller who tells at a manic pace. The only speed bumps are the constant laughs. The tales accumulate and build to a surprise ending that packs a powerful punch. Who says Christmas comes but once a year? Not Maritin.

Company: Pretend Productions
Show: Daddy Issues
Venue: Phoenix Theater

Universal in the Particular

Allison is an actor’s actor and a storyteller’s storyteller. She has absolute command of her craft and the tale she weaves is profoundly moving and studded with humor, wit and beauty. She achieves the ultimate goal of a personal narrative solo show: the universal in the particular. I know of what I speak. I’m also a solo show storyteller with the same yet completely different daddy issues that compelled me to create a solo show about it. Daddy Issues is a must see for anyone who has a father dead or alive.

Company: Light Bringer Productions
