Who Were These Women?

Myrtle Agnes Cain—Minnesota's trailblazing "Flapper Legislator!" ✨
At just 28 years old, Myrtle became one of Minnesota's very first female legislators, fighting fearlessly for women's rights, workers' rights, and equality for all. From leading labor strikes to taking on the Ku Klux Klan and championing equal rights decades before they became law, Myrtle never backed down from a fight.
Bold, determined, and far ahead of her time, Myrtle's incredible story changed Minnesota history forever.

Sue Metzger Dickey Hough—a woman who wasn't afraid to speak her mind. ✨
As one of Minnesota's first female legislators, Sue stepped into politics in 1923 ready to tackle some of the most debated issues of her day. From advocating for gun regulations and mandatory automobile insurance to championing child welfare and civic causes, Sue never shied away from controversy.
Even after leaving office, she remained a passionate activist, fighting for animal welfare, civic engagement, and the causes she believed in well into her eighties.
Bold, outspoken, and determined, Sue Hough's story is one of courage, conviction, and the complexities of making history.

Mabeth Hurd Paige—a woman who helped shape Minnesota history long before women could even vote. ✨
A passionate suffragist, lawyer, educator, and community leader, Mabeth traveled the country fighting for women's voting rights and helped found Minnesota's branch of the League of Women Voters. In 1922, she made history as one of the first four women elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives.
For more than two decades, Mabeth championed education, social welfare, workers' rights, and protections for Minnesota's most vulnerable citizens. Her lifelong dedication to public service left a lasting impact on communities across our state.

Hannah Jensen Kempfer—a farm girl who overcame poverty to become a trailblazer in Minnesota history. ✨
Born in extraordinary circumstances and raised in rural Minnesota, Hannah worked tirelessly to earn an education, becoming a teacher, community leader, farmer, and champion for those in need. In 1922, she made history as the first woman from rural Minnesota elected to the state legislature.
Armed with determination and a Model T Ford, Hannah traveled the countryside fighting for farmers, conservation, women, and children. Her courage and compassion helped shape Minnesota for generations to come.
