Great connection to the audience, and grounding in the work. An entertaining fringe slot, and something fresh to the one-person show experience. Something I'm usually not huge on, but musicbyskippy gave it a new feel!

A Genre-Hopping VH1 Storytellers-esque Experience

A musical journey of personal and professional fears that incorporates its audience (to their own desired level) is a truly daunting task and Skippy does it with ease and genuine kindness. A must-experience!

Accessible, entertaining, and heart warming

I was inclined to give Skippy a 'pass,' but I enjoyed my first Fringe beatboxing show (at least a decade ago at Theater Garage) so pushed myself to attend! I'm well over 70, and felt that this may not be an accessable style for me anymore. Was I ever wrong! The show was a blast: personal, accessible, and a variety of styles beyond beatboxing. Highly recommended ... and I'm curious how Luke finds the time to write his insightful reviews which I have been following since Day 1 of Fringe 2023.

More than a variety show

I would have been throughly entertained just listening to Skippy sing and beat box. He has an amazing stage presence and his music is a real treat. Very impressed with his ability to make music A cappella by manipulating his voice to make sounds and create rhythms. But Skippy takes it even further. Through touching and relatable stories he shares his fears professionally and personally. He even has a little audience participation for those who are willing. He really connects with his audience in a vulnerable way and that made me love him as a person just as much as I love his music. I was engaged the entire performance and left the theatre feeling inspired. Bravo to Skippy.

Infectious Energy

I met Skippy while in line for another show and you can tell immediately that he is just a delightful person. And his positive energy really shines through in his show! I loved the variety of styles of song, dance, and beatboxing and the audience gets to get involved too. The show is just heartwarming! Definitely go see it!!

ENERGY!

I am Deaf so this review is entirely about the visual/kinesthetic experience of watching this show. Yes, my Deaf self did enjoy this beatboxing variety show! Even though I couldn't hear anything! First of all, I could feel the vibration so that was fun. Second.of all, just basking in the sheer charisma and energy and warmth of this performer is a wonderful way to spend an hour. There were not many people in the audience when I saw it but that didn't stop him from going 100%. He took time to connect with each audience member in different ways. I was pulled on stage and he made me feel very at ease. Somehow he is able to be so energetic but exudes a calm the whole time. It's fun. Go see it.

how can a person do that?

but how, how do you rap so fast, and make noises with your face without passing out? the audience participation is limited to one person, so don’t let that steer you away, this was a joy, i think everyone left hyped, which helps if you’re going to multiple shows, or ending at fringe central. wikiwiki eric

Yippee Skippy!

What an exuberant, delightful, and triumphant use of the human mouth, lips, and tongue to create a full drum line of sounds! Very entertaining and touching exploration of professional fears and personal fears. Please come back to the MN Fringe!

Variety, Authenticity, & Audience Participation

Skippy is energetic and welcoming from the moment you enter the room, taking the time to greet each audience member and setting the expectations for a great show. And what a show of was! It has humor, it has talent, and it has heart. It will have you laughing and have you tearing up; from dealing with difficult topics to introducing silliness, at every moment Skippy is genuine through and through. And don't get me started on talent! He has a huge variety of genres. He's an incredible (INCREDIBLE!) beatboxer, rapper, and when he finds a genre he doesn't like, he challenges himself to make a song in that too! His show also has audience participation and I enjoyed it immensely. If you're on the fence about seeing his show, don't be! Just see it! You will have a fabulous time.

Get to tha Chopper!

Hearing this wickedly-talented beatboxer accelerate his chopper (a subgenre of rap) was one of many highlights in the show for me. Like an Olympic gymnast must practice for years to get into shape, so has this beatboxing phenom, and his audience work was deft and welcoming. He even got Juliana from Fringe’s Float to dance with him on stage and serenaded Big Dad Energy! With thanks to Phillip Andrew Bennett Low (Too Many Notes) for recommending this show!

Talent and Heart

For as much talent is in this show (and there's a lot) there's twice as much heart. Skippy takes the audience through some very vulnerable moments in his life with a variety of music genres, and a ton of energy and charisma. There was plenty of laughter mixed with the serious moments and we left feeling energized and lighthearted. This is definitely a positive and engaging performance, I really recommend you make sure to fit it into your Fringe schedule!

This show was high energy. The songs in the second half of the show were personal and powerful. He engaged with the audience at once. If he comes to Minnesota again see his act.
