Reviews for: That Which Is Green
Great performances!
A moving meditation on faith, friendship, and what we owe to the systems that create us. Van Loh and Rogers are stellar in this show. Make sure you catch their last performance!
How do you bury a tree?
Beautiful show that covers some very poignant topics with both comedy and sincerity.
Thought provoking and moving
This flet very authentic to the experience of a deep friendship that lasts years and persists over distance. I was left thinking about my closest male friend and how our relationship has grown and changed over the years. If you want to have your closest or oldest friend called up in your mind and heart, go see this show.
Symbolic story that hits on all cylinders
"That which is Green" hits on all cylinders. Writing = check; acting = check; allegoric relevance = check; singing = check. We especially appreciated the relevance to friendship, the movement back-and-forth through the stories (plural), and the singing. Oh my, the singing. Worth it just to listen to these wonderful voices!
A Beautiful Tale
That Which Is Green is a lovely little story that had me reflecting on change and how, in a moment in time, things that once were constant have become a variable, much like a tree in a forest. There were laughs, but there were genuinely tender little moments and I hope that people get to experience it.
tender portrayal of friendship
The central friendship between Kevin and Kevin was developed so deeply in the span of the show, with the history and familiarity beautifully rendered by the actors. I found the show sweet and touching, but it still contained challenging questions about how to live ethically. The balance struck there was really excellent.
Fabulous Show!
This is a beautifully layered show that explores so many levels. It's lighthearted, profound, and moving. The writing is top notch and both performers are excellent. Go with friends because this is one of those shows because it's one of those shows that when it's over, you will want to gather with those close you, have a glass or two of wine and talk.
Catharsis, laugher, skill, and some lovely songs.
This is a hard show to summarize, for one that seemed beautifully intuitive and heartfelt on the stage. It’s a duo about two men names Kevin; it’s about memory and nostalgia and failed love and lost faith. Or about the way were were raised and the paths along the way. Or about a tree. Or about a dinosaur Grinch.
The point is that this is a gorgeously written show, performed by two actors who are playing off each other wonderfully well. The acting is excellent, the use of the Southern’s large space is innovative, there’s an element of minimalism to the single piece of scenery that works very well.
This could have been very saccharine, and instead it was quietly profound and moving, without seeming exploitative or extreme. Not to be missed.
Beautiful!!
What a lovely production! Minimalist set, but it works so very well. I found myself close to tears and covered in goosebumps at the end.
Powerful bittersweet allegory
The acting in this show is phenomenal. If there weren't so many other shows to see I would love to see it again. Hopefully they are eligible for the Fringe encore so we can get another chance to see this remarkable show.
My favorite part was the part with the tree
I’m kind of annoyed because I’ve realized that I’m really quite a fan of Michael Rogers’s writing style and apparently the guy’s moving out of state this fall. But I guess that’s just more of a reason to catch one of the last performances of this show if you haven’t had the chance yet! It’s dialogue-heavy but the writing and performances will keep you engaged throughout. And I’m not saying you’ll definitely need a tissue but the sniffling sounds in the theater were undeniable. Not me though for I am very brave.
Incredible
This show is a little miracle. Please please please go see it.
Absolutely fantastic
Heartfelt, cathartic, funny and expensive. A deep exploration old the grief of the falling away of years and the deep roots we share with others. Really scrapes the raw parts of a long friendship down to the nerves. Also, beautiful beautiful harmonies! 🩷🩷🩷
A Waiting For Godot Vibe
The show had some interesting themes. The actors commanded the stage. The green light as a symbol of life had an affirming vibe. A note: the performers use the stage, aisles and rear entry area so pay attention.
A strong core, hard to get into
There is a fantastic relationship story in this show about the long-lived friendship between two men and how their friendship will have to change. This relationship felt real and strong both in the acting and as the story played out. This real, strong heart is buried under a lot of metaphor and artifice that I didn't feel strengthened that strong core, but instead weakened it. Challenging and at times frustrating, I yearned for each morsel of that true relationship. I wanted some of the other metaphorical parts to feel more true. A story worth discussing.
Great show!
Great show, so visually compelling and two great performers.
Beautiful and cathartic
This piece is an absolutely beautiful exploration of how organized religion helps us forge close bonds, but can also tear our worlds apart. Kevin and Kevin form a dynamic duo that shows how strong true friendships can stay, even when drifted apart. I was ugly crying halfway through the show, and the third french scene in particular is what did me in. Congratulations on opening night, and thank you for such a beautiful show!
I cried about a tree. Multiple times.
If you’ve been around the Minnesota Fringe for more than a second, you know Michael Rogers is a sensational storyteller and vibrant performer. So you likely won’t be surprised to hear that this piece has heart to spare, lovely moments of levity, and layers of beautiful meaning branching throughout the piece. Both performers understood the assignment 100% — their real-life friendship was beautifully palpable — and welcomed the audience into what I *have* to assume is a deeply personal story (with, of course, just a dash of fantasy). This is not a piece to be missed.
Heartfelt and Meditative
I was so happy to see these characters interact with each other. I felt a true connection between the two and true love in their friendship. I came away with a closer sense of the love I have for my own friends and the journeys we've experienced whether new or old.
Cast and Crew
Alex Van Loh
Kevin
Though he has been on a bit of a hiatus in recent years, Alex has been performing on stages since he played the munchkin coroner in The Wizard of Oz in second grade. And yes, he still knows the solo. From musicals, to improv, to singing at weddings, Alex enjoys connecting with a crowd and sharing a unique experience. This is his fifth MN Fringe show and he feels like the luckiest boy to share the stage again with Michael, his bestie and favorite scene partner since 2010.
