Reviews for: A Song in the Dark
A little hope goes a long way!
This show perfectly captures the helplessness, confusion and outrage many of us feel in these dark times. And it helps us ask the question “What now? What should we do?” while also instilling a little bit of hope. Grateful for this moving piece of theater.
"Waiting for Godot meets angry political theater"
The show description (in my review title) is perfect. We had been looking forward to "A Song in the Dark" - not exactly for the political content - but more because Vaky & Vaky are such fantastic MN Fringe supporters. We see them over-and-over again: in the artists' lines, applauding and laughing at performances, and actively supporting other artists. But once we got into the theater, we greatly appreciated the creativity of their work and their acting chops (oh, and dancing, did I mention dancing?).
Great show!
A creative process journey that resonated with me in the face of these dark and uncertain times.
Fists Up
The world is filled with darkness. Maybe art can save us—or maybe it can at the very least keep the flames of hope alive. If your scared and angry about the world, this is catharsis complete with an audience call to action on what you can do to make things just a little bit better.
Emotional Medicine for our times
If there is one thing Fringe 2025 really merits, it is a “Rage Against the Regime” type of show. It was just what my emotions needed that particular day when I saw it. Injustice (or the cumulative effect of one whack-a-mole injustice after another) was enraging me but I knew I couldn’t let it destroy me.
I too have been in the same shoes as the cast here- having done multiple Fringe shows before and then feeling like it didn’t really change anything. That included just last year where the final sentence on my printed shows cards was “Let’s stop Project 2025”)
The show began with a realistically self-reflective mode of feeling like one has screamed into the darkness only for the calvary not to show up.
And then, there were quite a few solid gold segments of very timely satire, irony and sarcastic ridicule against the purveyors of persistent darkness. Examples include what we saw in the previews about the Department of Fringe Efficiency (DOFE) being used by the anti-woke police to redact parts of the script - depicting going authoritarian over such petty things.
If you have one quick pitch on any cause for social betterment, you might get a chance to pitch it to the attendees, which is a nice thing to offer.

Standby Me, Even if I Cry
This father and son duo succeeds at what my mother and I currently can't do. They break the silence. They call out the unacceptable. They dance to the music. They dance without music. They take on the darkness and shine in whatever light available, or not. In the end, I wanted the whole audience to stand and sing. It was a moment of tremendous hope, which made me cry. But they were healing tears. Thank you! Please support local and traveling artists.
Exactly
We must all work at keeping the darkness out. Great to hear from the audience about things they are doing to help.
Vaky Vaky Very Very
Probably the most political show of the fringe. Shades of Waiting for Godot, with two guys trying to figure out what to do next while surrounded by chaos. What they DO do is entertaining and thought provoking, ending with a call to action. Great Job
A remedy to our Paralysis
Vaky Vaky have, with this provocative play, given the audience a means to look beyond the sense of WTF, now what ? By providing clarity on the bombardment of the immoral, outrageous and incomprehensible actions of trump and his minions, we are given an impetus to start to move past our overwhelming fear, and to feel not so alone in that fear. It's not an easy thing to move people to think they can push beyond the assault we experience every damn day. The play is cleverly constructed and moving, as it shows you that it takes one difficult step at a time to change anything. And, it was amazing that the cast approached the audience, to ask the question - what's out there that you know about that can help others to get started in fighting back against this oppressive darkness. That's involvement, and that's what it takes!

More Information
Out of Towners and Father & Son, Vaky Vaky have been trying to find a way to survive these turbulent times without losing their minds. Frequent Blackouts. Political Commentary. Absurd Comedy. Meta Humor. A Firm Belief that Art Can Save Us. AND YET, the darkness keeps approaching. Perhaps the only answer is for us to sing A SONG IN THE DARK.
In 2017 Vaky Vaky brought the Fringe Festival "The Masque of Power"
In 2008 we presented "This Play is Trash"
In 1998 we produced "Brothers"
