BurnOut County
Nationally touring, married comedians Tim Harmston and Mary Mack perform comedic vignettes of life in Northern Wisconsin’s BurnOut County. This dark comedy is a collage of stories, essays, sketch, and music that recreate the goings-on of the rural community where Mary was raised, and where Tim vacationed. Though Mack’s stories have been likened to those of Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion, this is a more truthful recounting of the “folksy” life. There are quite a few meth heads and gambling addicts in this Lake Wobegon, but we love them all the same. Mary and Tim strongly walk the comedy-tragedy line, but comedy wins.
“Comedy has to win; otherwise, where would we be? Where would most people be,” says Mack.
Both comedians have Comedy Central and late night television credits, each releasing brand new comedy albums this year. The couple divide their time among Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and any where the road takes them, but the Fringe is a welcomed change for the duo: Normally they perform on separate tours at comedy clubs or at company parties next to a buffet table where they are forced to focus on regular old stand up.
According to Harmston, “This show varies from our usual stand up comedy in that we get to stretch out, and maybe be a little artsier. Tell some real stories.”
