More Information
Every word, every silence, every single slant cuts deep like a C-Section.
"Maternal" features Clara, a first-time mom who moves back in with her mother after having a Cesarean birth. She soon starts to suspect her mother has an ulterior motive: taking her place and raising the child herself. With this play, Les Choreutes explore some of their favourite themes: intimacy, vulnerability, doubt, anxiety and obsession. "Maternal" is a show about motherhood, the mother-daughter relationship and feelings of inadequacy. The performances are intense and yet subtle, layered with subtext, a harsh past that refuses to be explained.
As is their raison d'être, Les Choreutes give you here a moment of raw theatre, a play that they not only act out but live through. And so does the stage, which suffers their plays just as much as their characters do. By the end, the floor is littered with dirty diapers, pain pills and blood.
Using the 2021 context to create their play and talk about intimacy and privacy, they invite you into the smaller, more personal space that is their rehearsal room for this one.
