Company: [Un]Qualified
Show: H.G. Wells' THE INVISIBLE MAN
Venue: Southern Theater

Phenomenal

The spectacle of physical comedy, the set, and the flow created an amazing experience. It’s hard to believe a story of what was just observed is able to be packed into less than an hour, yet feeling like the perfect amount of time. Can’t wait to see what else this team creates.

Exciting and Bold Work

This was my first experience observing work from this group, and excited to see more in the future. I've known several artists who have worked with them and glad I got to watch this production. Great use of space in Theatre in The Round, with three actors committed to their characters. I'm into fast-paced, quick exposition, especially in a Fringe show. They nail it right away, and don't leave me waiting for the show to start-start. There were moments where I was confused by how the existential stories for each character connected with the main theme and energy of the show, but the core "world" this sits in, is exactly what I want to enjoy. I'm not one who needs much justification for a bold choice, which I felt the dialect was, and it added a great layer to the story, and the character specifically. Audience interaction was fun and within it's absurdity, was a believable lesson, with characters who brought life to a script they seemingly all worked on.

Creative and Original

This is a show I walked into with no preparation. As soon as it started, I realized I was captivated by the preview of it a couple of weeks back, without knowing this was it. An incredible concept for a show, with dynamic acting, and the ability to find several tones within it's time to make it feel like a full-fledged production. It doesn't feel like it's condensed or had to be cut into 60 minutes. I'm unsure if I missed something in the exposition and/or establishment of the "magic" within the protagonist's skill (that other people can hear, but only if something deeper happens first with other people it seemed like) so felt confused at times with that rule specifically, but nonetheless, didn't take away from the performance. Timing and tech worked well and a great use of a large space with only four actors.

Venue: Augsburg Mainstage

Resilient encapsulates the work

This show is exactly what it needs to be. It's truthful, vulnerable, and probably the closest you can get to the truth. The first example of this is children entering the space at the top of the show. As we move past the opening moment, each performing center stage, at a big venue, reading stories that are authentic to them. The elegance of guidance among the adult actors blends perfectly with the contribution from the children as well. The adult actors also have (or what feels like) a clear history of storytelling skill sets that bring you into this show immediately. Never a dull moment. The balance was found in where the button to this show is, and leaves you feeling like you had a substantial story from everyone in the ensemble. Including the guitar player who introduces the story with the kiddos in a way that is unique to how the other actors bring their stories to the performance. The larger venue, with a performance like this, confidently makes the space intimate. All actors are on stage for the entire performance, observing the performance of one another with the audience. It gives the space an "in the round" feel with them sitting back. There are also duet style, and ensemble moments to bring more layers to a one-by-one storytelling piece. The spectacle is created with a "poor theatre" style setup, where actors are the focus, even when not performing. Brilliant idea for Fringe, and could see this work being expanded further.
