Powerful
This is one of the most amazing dance companies I have seen. I loved the variety of the cast. Clearly a range of ages, and also of sizes from smaller to taller. And it just made the show better thanks to the amazing choreography that blended everyone’s best talents (power, poise, precision, and even just expression in face and movement) into a rich set of stories, told in dance. From our busy nonstop, lives where we literally walk past each other every day, unseeing; even as companionship and conflict, sprout up and seemingly random, encounters, A family struggling with physical conflict and how its trauma can carry through generations. And the worst sort of violence of predator and victim; even when the predator leader suffers the same fate from vengeful spirit. But in the end, all is washed clean, leaving the audience in peace. But with so much to think about for hours afterwards before you really, really realize what an amazing experience you just had.
Company: Deconstructing Directing
Show: Director's Cut: Where Play Becomes Magic
Venue: Rarig Kilburn Theatre
A force multiplier
This was an awesome show. Watching two terrific actors start with a simple script, reading and end with a very dramatic and emotional scene was a treat. Watching this talented director support, encourage, and with meaningful questions and suggestions, occasionally redirect the actors to build up both their own individual performance as well as the way they worked together was truly amazing. Witty, and informative, and a joy to watch.
Company: Special When Lit
Show: Fangs and Bangs (and Sangs)
Venue: The Southern Theatre
All the thangs…
Songs you recognize, remember or maybe just move you; characters you feel like you knew or could relate to in some way; and, most of all, stories pulled from the deep and tangled roots of youth that both make you cringe and yet provide a communal catharsis through the authentic (and also suitably over-the-top) delivery of the amazing actors that. Actors who, for some reason, chose to read vampire fan fiction from a talented writer’s high-school archives with minimal to no preparation. Yet every member of the cast took it up a notch when it came their time to shine.
Company: Wheeler In The Sky
Show: In The Garden Of American Heroes
Venue: The Southern Theatre
Well Done!
Wheeler brings a legendary character to life...after death. Sharing both the sympathetic and the "monumental a**hole” sides of Gen Custer, he helps us see how America has its own vainglorious mythology, and the ultimate failure that can come of not recognizing the truth of it before it is too late. Lost half a kitty because of the sound quality. Not for lack of a clear voice—just that it bounced poorly off the brick and mortar backdrop when he turned around.
Company: KAIROS Dance Theater
Show: husk/vessel
Venue: The Southern Theatre
Amazing!
I was blown away by this performance. So much was communicated with movement and a well chosen score: love and rejection; exploration and awe; struggle and growth. From powerful bursts of speed and energy to the quiet strength of a frozen pose... From a person who normally chooses a written story over a video, I am at a loss to say more. You really just have to go see the show. It goes beyond words.
Company: Jennifer Vosters
Show: Songs Without Words (or, The Mendelssohn Play)
Venue: Rarig Nolte Xperimental Theatre
Powerful performance
This show is jaw-dropping amazing. Unless your jaw is clenched to help hold in tears of joy or loss—Jennifer Vosters invokes both in her genius biographical portrayal of two musical masters. There are, in fact, "songs without words"; but mostly there are words: spoken in character and with such clear purpose and raw emotion you will get swept away. There are not enough kitties to rate this show properly.

What is your favorite holiday?
A very talented group of improv artists and a supporting keyboard musician start with an actual holiday somewhere in the world and build a story around it—including musical numbers! I showed up on “psychic day” (yep! It’s a thing on Aug 3: https://nationaltoday.com/august-3/) which led to some wild adventures and a tug of war between fact and fiction—and, of course, love—in a very contemporary, ad-hoc tale. There were some rich singing voices, beautiful duets, commanding stage presence, timely (and often bawdy) interjections, and en ever present wink to the audience that brought laughs and cheers throughout. If only there was a Captain Stubing trying to wrap it all up with a bow … It will be interesting to see what holiday comes next!
