This was a riot

I laughed til my face hurt. This cast is so good, and the premise is hilarious. So glad I went to see this!

Company: Nightfall Productions
Show: Hamluke
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre

I have a great feeling about this

I knew this would be a fun show from the buzz of others having seen his staging or previous mountings but I was genuinely surprised at just how deftly the script brought these two stories together (it’s hard enough doing Hamlet in an hour, much less by way of Star Wars). Combined with universally great performances, live music, and some of the best production design and puppetry I’ve seen at the Fringe, I had a goofy smile on my face for the entire run time.

Company: Jennifer Vosters
Show: Songs Without Words (or, The Mendelssohn Play)
Venue: Rarig Nolte Xperimental Theatre

This breaks the kitty scale

10/5 kitties. She deserves the entire litter. I can confidently say that this was one of the greatest one-person shows I’ve see firsthand - and not just at the Fringe, but ever. The discipline and precision with which Vosters utilizes her craft is captivating. It’s one right that I felt I was watching a master at work as she provided a tribute to two masters in their own right. I left this show in tears and had to swallow a heavy sob lest I make a fool of myself in the Rarig X. Bravo maestro.

So happy this show returned

A Motz show is one that I never miss at the Fringe - except this one, because I missed its original run. I’m so glad he brought it back because it not only was not at all what I expected, but it gave us Motz returning to showing us what a multifaceted performer and writer he is. He keeps you on your toes, metaphorically tossing a lot of balls in the air, and it’s so satisfying (and moving) when he pulls it all together. Mr. White wasn’t half bad either.

Company: Haute Dish Productions
Show: The Book of Mordor
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre

A good fun show that could be great

IP-based musicals are a staple of the Fringe, and they’re difficult to pull off well. This company does a good job at condensing two wildly different properties together with clever parodies. While my enjoyment was hindered to some degree by some uneven vocals and messy staging and blocking, the writing of the Book of Mormon parodies was very well done, and one segment in particular (the parody of Spooky Mormon Hell Dream, in Mordor) was worth the time alone.

Company: LandmanLand
Show: A Sad Carousel 2: The Timely Death of Herschel Douscheburg
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre

For the real Fringe sickos (complimentary)

What I love about Sam’s writing is the fact that, although this is in-joke heavy to a degree some might see as too niche, he has more enough well-written satire, jokes, and wit so that there’s something for everyone. And when his writing is paired with confident performers who are game for anything? You get a hell of a good time.
