Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre
Long Live the Queen of the Fringe!
Un spectacle pour la reine guerrière française qui vit en tout le monde! Melancholics Anonymous is synonymous with Fringe excellence with each passing year, and this show takes the crown. Drawing inspiration from beauty pageant culture without playing too heavily into overdone stereotypes, the entire company pulls off a well-constructed story with panache. Adding some extra sparkle to the usual suspects of MA is Maddie Baillio-lookalike Kate Cosgrove as the sweet-as-pie new girl Amber, a character not unlike Baillio's character in Dumplin'! (seriously, they could be cousins) who charms the audience with her warm-hearted personality and quirky quips. Other standouts include Bee Davis as competitor-you-love-to-hate Charlene; Anneliese Garner as adorable, awestruck Abigail; and the incredibly versatile Samantha Miller, whose bold performance as the faithful Maid of Orleans, adds theatrical reverence to subject matter usually seen by the world as silly and vapid. The entire ensemble deserves a tiara for keeping it fresh with nonstop surprises, proving that the initials MA rightfully belong to Melancholics Anonymous - sorry, Miss America, maybe next year. Vive la reine du Fringe!
