DOLLY WHO?

A very magical show!

I had such a lovely experience seeing Dolly Who! This show has such great humor and heart. Destiny ‘s writing and improve capability is unmatched! They establish and maintain a great connection with the audience, and you can’t help but have a good time! Looking forward to seeing more work from them!

Wonderful Human Puts on a Wonderful Solo Show

I was at preview night and was delighted by the preview for DOLLY WHO?, which made it a must see on my list of shows for Fringe 2023. Destiny opens with a dance number that is charismatic and funny, but this is NOT a dance show. Their cartoon characters are silly and witty in a way that reminds me of cartoons like Adventure Time (one of the cartoons not mentioned by Destiny, though many are referenced!) Each show is unique in that added to the cast of cartoon characters is one that Destiny makes up based on audience suggestions and draws on the spot! At the performance I attended, we ended up with a character that I think should have been named "Bahn Mi in a Bucket Hat" because I find alliteration hilarious. Destiny named him Dell, and I respect the artistic decision to give him a proper name. I also had a favorite character who I won't spoil by mentioning in my review. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone attending Fringe this year!

Dolly Delights!

So much to love about this show. Amazing hand drawn characters (one of which was drawn live in front of us), humor, absurdism. I really liked how it remained appropriate for all ages without pandering. Dolly Who is a wonderful look into the process of trying to create a show that could help raise a generation.

Damn Good Show

I went to see Dolly knowing almost nothing about the show or the performer. but decided heck, it’s Fringe, so take a chance. The hour went by so quickly I was stunned. Dolly Davison could read the encyclopedia on stage and I’d be thoroughly entertained. Some performers have that thing that just glows on stage. Dolly has it in spades. Whatever you do, add Dolly to your must see list. Now!

Hello, Dolly!

This one-woman masterpiece-to-be is brought to you by the letter D: the daffy Destiny "Dolly" Davison and her delightful drawings. Join Dolly for an adventure like no other, covering everything from amoebas to the entire universe. I felt like I really got to know Davison as a performer and a person; despite herself, she is fearless in front of an audience. Undeniably a true storyteller, she maintains control of the situation and is able to move the story along with well-timed jokes and bits but comes off fresh as a daisy as if she's doing it for the very first time. Keep the laughs coming and keep performing...audience members won't have to say, "Dolly WHO?" for too much longer.

Heart = warmed

"Dolly Who?" is the kind of performance that makes me want to keep coming back to the Fringe! It's a very original, funny, and charming show that let's the audience ride the creative wave of being a performing arts creator. There is a small amount of audience interaction that helps to make the show unique every time. Delightful.

A gosh darn delight!

I saw this show opening night and from the moment Destiny/Dolly got on stage I knew we were in good hands. Dolly has confidence, humor, and is charismatic as hell. The show is a great mix of childhood nostalgia with improv and touching moments that feel very personal and special. GO SEE THIS!!

Bravo to this “I know me” artist!

This is from seeing show #5. In one sentence: there is nothing more comforting and charming than watching a show dedicated to the joy and confidence surrounding who you are and what you can bring to the table (and in case, the canvas). In three sentences: if you enjoy the movie Napoleon Dynamite, comedian Dmitri Martin, the musical “Oh Hello,” and/or the TV show Mister Rogers Neighborhood, this show is a perfect fit. As a consumer of all four, my palate for entertainment and authenticity was satiated, as you witness a first-time solo show Fringer that won over support across many generations with her playful designs and quirky personality. I look forward to the day when watching her future work, knowing she’s become a cultural staple as DOLLY and helped inspire next generations to give things a try and simply be themselves.

I want to crawl inside Dolly's brain

I could watch this for hours, the actor is so charming, the audience participation doesn't feel forced, i am definitely stealing the idea for the air guitar.

A fun, light-hearted escape

Dolly instantly charms the audience, incorporating dance, music, humor, and artwork. She was especially skilled at nurturing and incorporating the children’s input from the audience.

DOLLY WHO? An absolute MUST SEE!

“Dolly Who?” is a amazing master class in creative improv. A show full of energy, cartoon characters, belly laughs, and heart felt moments… by the time it’s over you don’t want it to end. The theme is reminiscent of the nostalgic flavors of “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood,” only, Dolly iterates that her version of this type of show doesn’t technically exist yet. She then proceeds to take the audience on an unexpected, magical journey in creating a new “episode” each night. This is an absolute must see at Fringe Fest. Dolly is a charismatic force of nature that will have you leaving the theatre with a smile embedded in your heart.

It doesn't need to be perfect...

... It just needs true! What lovely wisdom to share! The show was delightful. Well not THE show but A show. Destiny lets us into her imagination in such a charming and disarming way. This show felt like taking a deep breath and I'm still smiling. Destiny has two more shows so add this to your list!

A smart, funny hour of theater

Destiny/Dolly Davison has taken a very simple concept -- take ideas from the auditions to improvise an episode of a cartoon based on her character creations -- and turned it into a thoughtful and funny meditation on her identity, her family, and the nature of her art. Davison is a delightful presence and fills the theater with heart and humor. And dancing. And a fanny pack monster. I hope she keeps creating for the stage!

Dolly is Great!

I typically have trouble paying attention in solo shows, but Dolly captured my attention! I thought the art was so cool, and Destiny was such a charismatic performer. She really played with us as an audience, and felt like I was a part of a friend group. The improv element was also really well-done, and so joyful to see the performer having fun and PLAYING! If you like being open to a little goofiness, this is one for you.

All That Glitters IS Gold In This Great Show

Dolly Who is a charming and thoughtful delight by Destiny/Dolly Davison. Equal parts memoir and Improv, Dolly uses her cartooning skills to create a Reading Rainbow-esque show while also tackling deep questions like existentialism, being unable to meet older relatives’ younger selves, and what became of the air conditioner from the Brave Little Toaster. Fun and worthwhile for all ages and all snails. Unrelated to review but mildly interesting: on opening night of Rarig I saw Dock Work and Dolly Who back-to-back—both titles eight letters with the initials D.W.

Thoughtful

A beautiful adventure taken in what is a surprising, hour long show. My favorite solo show of the festival! I'll think about squirrels for a while...

I want to see more of Dolly’s World!

This show spoke to my creative soul. I loved the process based approach and the zooming out and zooming into our humanity through sweetness and absurdity. The interdisciplinary use of dope drawings made for an ultra cool and unique show experience. Right after the show I saw a squirrel outside and I could’ve sworn it was running towards a tree with a paint brush in tow. Many thanks to Dolly for creating and adding another magical lens to our shared existence ✨

Dell is on a diet

That was the name of our children's show episode, featuring my mesh bucket hat as a signature accessory and origin story for Dell. Get all cozy and ready your guffaws for Dolly's endearing, witty, and whimsical tour of her artsy world and her fartsy friends (fartsy as in hilariously grumpy). Leave your destinies at the door, we're co-making our own very cute and funny world with Dolly.

Radical Sincerity

I'm in love. I don't normally write reviews but this show was a balm and full of the kind of creativity, honesty, charisma and heart that I am always on the look out for. From the opening dance number (this is NOT a dance show) to the thoughtful details of her minimal set and costumes. It's clear a lot of skill, heart, and soul went into devising and creating the framework for Dolly/Destiny to create pure magic in front of you. The show will change every night but I can't imagine an audience leaving anything other than filled with light. This homage to favorite children's shows pulls on nostalgia without feeling overly precious - and lets you take a deep breath for an hour.

Just a Real Hoot I'll Tell Ya

Destiny's a force of nature, but like, a nice one. Solo shows are big scary, but she handles herself, and the audience, with a ton of self-acceptance and self-assurance. The opening song is a real killer, and her dance to go with it is so silly the whole room was 100% on her side. Destiny's cartoon characters are a real great bunch of little guys who seem good to hang out with. My favorite was either the Cool Witch or the Ghost of Your 30s. This show reminded me of what makes me feel great about making art, which is a really nice thing to walk away feeling!
