Company: Rippling Stories
Show: Against the Odds: Rachel Carson and the Writing of Silent Spring
Venue: Augsburg Studio

An Undiminished Noise

I was compelled by the preview of this work to attend the full performance and I wasn't disappointed. There is a mastery of control within "Against the Odds" that makes it engaging because of its authenticity. Knutson's thorough research of her character is personified with the clear scripting of this work. She focuses on the work that leads to "Silent Spring" and avoids going into a false heightened drama. The show is compelling and provides an introduction to Carson and her significant work.

Company: What's Next Productions
Show: Pillow Talk
Venue: Rarig Center Arena

Where was Rock Hudson?

This show started with an intriguing premise set inn the early 1800s that was expertly delivered by the four actors in the first scene. But when the show shifted to the contemporary setting in subsequent scenes it became unclear with its identity - LGBTQIA? Horror? Comedy? The content and clarity suffered. The title may knowingly or unknowingly reference Rock Hudson's closeted life but it is that content initially brought to the stage that would be interesting to see the author explore.

Company: Rogues Gallery Arts
Show: My Only Hope for a Hero
Venue: Southern Theater

A Blessing in Content and Presentation

This production was exceptional. It was captivating in its exposition as the work started and the immediacy of Washington's performance fostered the audience's engagement. As the work progressed and the emotional intensity became evident, I found myself experiencing the events through Washington's eyes. The sacredness of being fully present with and for others was revealed in this intense work. I would recommend this piece to everyone and suggest they bring a hanky.

Company: Elizabeth Young
Show: Betsy Show
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre

Heaven to Betsy

"The Betsy Show" is a strong example of autobiographical writing. The information provided within this one woman show is extensive and at times becomes unclear as the performer, Elizabeth Young-Collins tries to share it. I am interested in seeing how this show will evolve if Young-Collins continues to evolve this piece. One of the highlights of Fringe is experiencing some works in their infancy that are still finding their form.

Company: Juliana Frick
Show: FLOAT
Venue: Augsburg Mainstage

Make a new friend - Myra

"FLOAT" is a well crafted show blending humor and angst to create a masterful production. Julianna utilizes physical and oral skills to entice the audience into a personal relationship with Myra. As the show progresses, Myra becomes a friend instead of a character in a play and with the unexpected twists the audience experiences a range of emotion. The skill level exhibited by Frick is hard to match. This show is at the top of my recommendation list. Attend and make a new friend with Myra.
