Amazing theatre!
All of these actors put in their all. Set was so inventive and fun! I loved it and haven't stopped talking about it since seeing it.
Company: Special When Lit and The Winding Sheet Outfit
Show: Stabby Stab Stab
Venue: Crane Theater
Exceptional
Winding Sheet Outfit never disappoints. A spooky story with amazing acting, neat effects, and a gripping true story with amazing depth. Go see this show.
Company: Sandbox Theatre
Show: Yes No Maybe (please explain)
Venue: Rarig Center Thrust
Cute concept, little story
I loved walking in to the projection with the little toys - overall all of the use of the camera was very neat and fit the nostalgia part. But I wished there was a clearer structure. Why is the main character reading these notes? What's driving her from beat to beat? That part was unclear and I think the show could have been stronger with some more depth and purposeful choices.
Company: Hercules Theatre Company
Show: Adaptopus
Venue: Augsburg Mainstage
Interesting concept, slow pacing
I liked how unique this show idea was, but once the real action started, a half hour had already passed. All of the exposition was delivered so slowly. I would have enjoyed it a lot more had the pacing quipped along a lot faster and there had been more meat to the debate portion of the plot. I think more of the jokes would have landed if the cues had been tighter as well. Both Kendra and Michael understood the pacing however, and had great comedic timing.
Company: an alleged Theatre Company
Show: A Swimming Lesson in a Theatre Without a Lifeguard
Venue: Theatre in the Round
Fringe funny
You can always guarantee Alleged will come out with a weird but expertly written show. The weirdness is so funny though, and I've come to eagerly await their performance every year. Very fringey, be ready to maybe be confused but be entertained nonetheless.
Company: Hey Rube!
Show: Behemoth
Venue: Theatre in the Round
Confusing structure
I came in very excited after last year's Orzel Rising, which was such a beautifully told story. I think Behemoth had potential to be just as good, but the story got muddled in a unconventional Storytelling choice. If "dream scenes" were more concretely established and/or outside of the dreams storyline was more linear, I think I would have liked it more.
Company: Melancholics Anonymous
Show: A Girl Scout’s Guide to Exorcism
Venue: Rarig Center Arena
Unique and creative
Such a well written show, good timed jokes and nostalgia with hints of real tween angst peppered in. Sit near the front if you can, I had trouble hearing all of the actors and they often spoke over each other. Overall would recommend wholeheartedly!
