Food for the Soul
Not since Jodie Comer performed Prima Facie has a solo performer gripped an audience like Jennifer Vosters does in this piece. Her energy and pacing is absolutely electric, elevating an already beautiful script into a soaring melody that filled her venue with beauty and emotion with every glance. Her passion for the complicated characters and relationships she's portraying is absolutely radiant throughout the entirety of a brilliant and unforgettable hour
Company: Cora Casper
Show: INSOMNIA DOGS
Venue: Mixed Blood
Pleasantly Vicious
Insomnia Dogs is an ambitious and insane little play chocked full of gorgeous moments. A talented cast bring levity and heart to a complicated story, along with some delightfully clever staging from writer/director Cora Casper. This is a beautiful exploration of young adulthood, love, artistry, finding your voice, and the thorny edges of human connection
Company: Small Waves
Show: Cabin Fever
Venue: Barbara Barker Center for Dance
The Worst Date Ever (In the best way)
A smart concept done extraordinarily well by a team of charming and delightfully insane improvisers. If you're looking for a funny, tightly crafted hour of sapphic romance, look no further!
Company: SUPERMOON
Show: All Your Shimmering Gold
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre
You Will Be Changed For the Better
I've never experienced an hour like the one this show provides. From a mesmerizing physical performance by Michael Torsch and crew to the glorious and haunting operatics of the writing, this is an absolutely unforgettable experience. It left me of the unique ache of the end of an Ari Aster movie. This crew knows exactly what the show needs to be and lives in that space with beauty and a gilded stillness. Not a single breath or muscle is wasted. I absolutely leapt to my feet at the end; spending the days after feeling enthralled and afraid. Absolutely stunning!
Company: Michael Quadrozzi
Show: Against My Will
Venue: Rarig Nolte Xperimental Theatre
Engaging and Alive
Michael is a natural storyteller, taking you on a beautifully written weave through the moments that made him who he is. A vulnerable, hilarious, and vibrant kind of storytelling that leaves you feeling beautifully exposed and grateful to be so. I called my mom after and I'm sure you will too
Company: KAIROS Dance Theater
Show: husk/vessel
Venue: The Southern Theatre
An inspired masterpiece!
Words don’t do justice to what is by all counts an energized, athletic triumph of a performance. The choreography is breathtaking- at multiple points I found myself muttering “Wow”. I really loved the short talkback at the end of the performance where we were able to hear a little more about the process of creating the work. I’m sad this company isn’t local because I’d love to see more of their work!
Company: The Winding Sheet Outfit
Show: The Spirit Moves You To Color The Unseen
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre
Beguiling and Insightful
I knew nothing going in about the painter at the core of this delightful and gorgeous show. Told through music, memory, and an inspired physical poetry, this brechtian dramedy is a lovely introduction into a fascinating figure. Definitely keen to learn more after the show!
Company: Kelly Shuda
Show: OPERA PUNKS
Venue: The Southern Theatre
Outstanding chemistry and talent!
Some of the twin cities hottest improvisers are apparently also some of the best singers too! Catchy melodies and intriguing storylines created right off the dome- Opera Punks is one of the best improv shows I’ve ever seen. Special shoutout to the incredible musician driving the show along- don’t miss!
Company: Melancholics Anonymous
Show: Joan of Arc for Miss Teen Queen USA
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre
A Delightfully Silly, Beauty Queen Romp
Filled with Melancholics signature wit and earnestness, this is a delightfully unhinged pageant of talent for every ensemble member. Everyone has their shining moment and plays it perfectly. Full of singing, puppets, a tap number, and an impressive amount of heart, this is a fabulous play that lives perfectly in the Thrust. A must see!
Company: Theatre on the Rocks
Show: A Good Cancer to Have
Venue: Mixed Blood
Hilarious and emotional
Sam's a born entertainer taking you on a hilarious Willy Wonka ride through an incredibly vulnerable part of his life. With Leah Sweere leading the charge with an endless supply of puppets, streamers, music, and ultrasounds, Sam Sweere's "A Good Kind of Cancer" is a uniquely brave and exciting production. Shoutout to the wonderful crew helping to make that beautiful and emotional ending moment happen
Company: Mermaid Productions
Show: The Abortion Chronicles
Venue: Rarig Kilburn Theatre
Nuanced and Vibrant
This monologue cycle is delightfully intimate and tender, anchored by a collection of outstanding actors and plenty of compelling material. While tackling a challenging and deeply personal subject, every story felt like an invitation rather than a dissertation. With nuanced characters and complicated relationships throughout, The Abortion Chronicles is refreshing and necessary. Scott Gilbert’s direction keeps the piece funny and engaging without losing an ounce of power or heart. Particular kudos to Ariel Pinkerton for a vibrant performance
