No Shrieking Nor Harpies—Just Talent
Hannah, Lizzie, and Taj (and Justin on keys) are musical improv icons. Full stop. If you haven't yet heard of the Harpies, you need to add them to your list. NOW. On top of consistently delivering top-tier comedy and writing hit songs on-the-spot about whatever random topic the audience suggests, these three friends have the kind of chemistry that leaves you thinking "maybe I should start a troupe of my own!" But if you do, know that you'll have some fierce competition—the Shrieking Harpies are truly the best in the business!

A Hilariously Good Time for Everyone's Lower Half
I was sold at "high school journals"—they're always funny. Given Nissa's track record, I assumed it would be a good time, but I had no idea it would be AMAZING. There are no words. Every night will feature different guests and different readings, so experiences may vary, but the Sunday night at 10pm performance was AN EVENT. From mating fireflies to teen boys admitting they'll kiss anything to "ball juggling" to "The Thong Song" by Sisqo… Nissa's high school vampire fanfiction on Live Journal has some of the best writing in the entire festival, and I cry-laughed all the way through. Make room in your schedule for this one!

Show: Clown Funeral
Venue: Theatre in the Round
The Best Worst Funeral
Someone described this show as four clowns being really bad at putting on a funeral. I disagree. To be honest, I kind of want my funeral to be like this. Beneath the silly songs and slapstick and drawings and occasional crassness is a whole lot of heart. A somber undertone reminds us to keep enjoying what little time we have on this planet; to celebrate the people we love; and to befriend the kind of people who would send us off in such a wholesome way.

Show: Hamluke
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre
Fun Under the Twin Suns
I had an incredible time at Hamluke! I'm one of those Star Wars nerds whose only interaction with the "Ham" half was The Lion King, yet I didn't feel left out at all. As I see it: this was a creative mashup of two properties by a cast and crew who deeply cared for both. The impressions were spot-on, the custom props and costumes were well crafted, and the bardly band made everything feel more immersive. It's sure to entertain every father, mother, mentor, uncle, aunt, and everyone from the planet Alderaan… as long as you've seen the original trilogy. Maybe my lack of "Ham" knowledge didn't make me feel left out because almost every big punchline was a force-pull-quote from Star Wars. I had fun testing my memory of side character names and deep-cut phrases. However, if you're not acquainted with the "Luke" half of this show, you may find yourself wondering why everyone is laughing, perhaps wishing for more non-referential forms of humor. A round of applause to cast and crew for a well-crafted piece of art, even if it isn't for everyone (maybe that's the point!).

Show: The Temporary Tattoo Trio
Venue: Rarig Kilburn Theatre
Worst Trio Ever
I was promised tattoos and fun, but this trio of "friends" spent the entire hour arguing about their friendship. And it was hilarious. Go see this show!
