Gently-paced storytelling
I loved this show - the sweet stories from the performer’s childhood in the USSR, his beautiful classical guitar songs, and the Moth performer’s story at the outset. Not a flashy show, but engaging stories that I’d love to hear more of

Show: Mind Reader

Mindboggling
It almost all seems impossible, unless Steven is actually, truly, mindreading. Whether or not you can figure out how he does it, the show is immensely entertaining. And, I learned some memorization tricks!

In a truly great Fringe year,
this was my favorite show. He starts funny and a little crude (but not bad), and then.. but I don’t want to give spoilers. See it fresh. If you love powerful storytelling, memoir, and non-Americans’ perspectives on our country, go see this one -

Show: Big Honor Student Energy

Always great!
I loved this show, as Alisa opened up more about her life as a working children's-party-musician! The only thing that I missed was Alisa's singing and multi-instrumented songs. We got snippets of her beautiful voice, but just go ahead and play THE SONG, Alisa! That said, the show was laugh-out-loud funny; her timing is great, the circle-back was perfect, and she left me with stuff to think about (like solo apartments in big cities). Please come back next year, Alisa; and bring your uke!

Show: What We Wore
Venue: Open Eye Theatre
Loved this layered storytelling
This was not what I expected, but I was very grateful to see this show. Gabi is a wonderful storyteller, and she weaves compelling history into stories of her own family. I would take class from her, if she offered one; this hour story can be so much more - a book, a movie, a college class - I left wanting to hear more; an hour wasn't enough.

Venue: Open Eye Theatre
Raw and real
This show is heart. It's not a slick production, although the use of the puppets was super-inventive. The show is a woman telling her story with the help of friends who supported her through a painful process. It's well-told, not so much as theatre, but as an honestly-told story of a heart-breaking experience, and all of the conflicted, painful, and confusing emotions that arose. And the ending is heart-warming; I left reminded of the power of deep friendship and connections.

Watch it all come together!
I am not in the theatre professions; so I was fascinated to watch the director and two actors show us how they work together to make words from a text (a 500+ year-old text, for our show!) become compelling scenes that speak to events, feelings, motivations, behaviors that are timeless. It really was a step-by-step process that brought words to life, relevant and compelling life!
