Company: Lady Z Productions
Show: The 4 “W”s and the “H” of Murder
Venue: Mixed Blood
Good premise, but not quite there
Some good scenes and strong performances help elevate the material, but the whole thing feels disjointed. Still, with a little tightening up, they could really have something here, and I'd definitely check out other productions from this company.
Company: Third Space Theater
Show: Breach
Venue: Theatre in the Round
Best I've seen so far
This was on my watch list, but not a super high priority, but it happened to fit neatly into my schedule today. I'm so glad we chose it! Fantastic ensemble, tightly written script and masterful use of lighting, sound and movement. Exactly the kind of show I love to see at Fringe. Don't miss it!
Company: Steven Nicholas
Show: Mind Reader
Venue: Rarig Nolte Xperimental Theatre
Super fun
Entertaining and amazing feats of mentalism. I could have watched another hour.
Company: Snikt! Bamf! Thwip!
Show: Invasive Species or: In Space No-One Can Hear Your Steam
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre
Great steam humor!
Funny send-up of Alien and the steampunk genre with a talented cast. The pacing seemed a little off, but I think that can be chalked up to opening with a 10 pm Thursday night show to a relatively small crowd. I loved the "who's on first" bit and the Van Helsing references.
Company: Melancholics Anonymous
Show: Joan of Arc for Miss Teen Queen USA
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre
Fantastic ensemble cast
As I watched, I kept thinking, 'This is the performance I'll single out in my review . . . .No, THIS one . . . . or maybe THIS one.' But one of the highlights of this piece is that it gives each of its characters their moment to shine. It's also hilarious and surprisingly poignant at times. Only two, probably related, nits to pick: one, it was hard to hear at times, sometimes because the audience was laughing, sometimes because the cast threw their lines away too fast, sometimes just the acoustics of the space. And two, I don't think they used the thrust stage to its best advantage. Most of the action seemed to play to the front, not the side where I, unfortunately, sat. Pick your seat accordingly!
