Reviews for: What If We Hugged?
Hugs all around!
I love when performers try something different and seeing Levi's first solo show was an honor. Great storytelling, mixed with the fun you expects from him, though less rolling around on the floor than usual.
Authentic storytelling, high energy!
Poignant, funny, engaging
Two related stories, energetically told, and linked together in an agreeable and relatable way. Sympathetic, funny. Really glad we chose this one!
Funny, heartfelt and true
Levi is an engaging storyteller who conjures vivid images with his words. His show is honest and respectful of the other people in his stories. Also, his mom was at the show—how cool is that?!
Fun Chapters for a Memoir
I attend a fair number of "artist life stories" shows, as there's usually at least of couple of good takeaways for me to consider for my own life. This one was no different and was delivered with the comedy and heart I've come to expect from his work. Well worth your time.
Excellent style, less substance
We have seen many Comedy Suitcase shows in the past, but eventually decided that physical comedy was not a genre we related to. So we were super excited when we saw Levi's bio ("race and gender justice" oriented work) and show summary ("stories of masculinity and fatherhood"). We hoped for some deep stories and introspection.
That wasn't quite what we saw. Levi started by telling us that he was heavily influenced by 1980/90 TV sitcoms. And his show was about that deep and complex.... so, yes, I've had stress tests and angiograms and his stories seemed to be factually complete at the level I might share with my best friend over a drink. But not all that interesting to anyone else than my best friend and me!
It is true, that the audience seemed to be very 'friends and family' heavy. I'm wonder what outcome Levi thought complete strangers would walk away with?
We hope that next year we can hear about his deeper interests!
thoughtful and hilarious
Levi is a very thoughtful person and an incredibly funny performer. In this show he displays both facets, sharing two personal stories from his life — along with digressions, spontaneous discoveries, and ad breaks. i loved it.
Special Guest Star: Levi's Mom
The show wasn't necessarily about her, but it wasn't not not about her either, or at least her influence in his life. The stories were sweet, funny and genuine.
you’ll pass out… from laughter!
scary situations softened by laughter. and a LOT of laughs will fall outta your face!
We Hugged!
A light touch on the serious topics of fatherhood and masculinity emerges in Levi’s poignant telling of a couple of personal life-altering experiences. Both funny and engaging.

More Information
Levi learned a lot about how to be a man and a father from TV dads. Take a childhood of being raised by TV and mix in 20+ years of performing comedy and slowly understanding the painful complexity of masculinity norms and you have a 45 year-old, straight, white, cis-man who shares stories of his life through the lens of sitcom structures and overwhelming feelings. What if We Hugged features stories of childbirth, heart surgery, and what it means to be a decent man.
