Reviews for: Write Me Letters
Great Beginning
This has the potential, but I am left with a feeling that it is missing from the story. Perhaps it was the editing to make the time for the festival, but I like the premise and would like to see more development on this.
A beautiful story
Wow, i miss my grandmas! A really lovely story between a grandma and her grandson as he graduates and prepares to go to college. Through a series of letters a true love and friendship emerge. Both actors carried this show beautifully through their acting choices and through the well sung songs! Definitely worth a Fringe slot! I would consider this a can’t miss!
Sweet, lowkey
This was a wholesome musical, I enjoyed 2 of the songs especially: tickin and life is good. Made me think of my own grandma who I write letters to. The majority of the songs are slower and more reflective so I enjoyed when the tone shifted. The two actors had some good duet moments and they both had enjoyable facial expressions.
P. S. I Love You
An adorable pas de deux between George and his grandma (I don't think she had a name), writing and sharing their struggles with the uncertainties of life changes, from George moving to college to Grandma moving to an assisted living facility. The gentle music and heartfelt lyrics provided a rhythm that moved the story along with tenderness rather than being overly sentimental. With songs like "Tickin'," "Seasons," and "Life is Good," I could see this show being popular with anyone who's ever had a grandparent or been one.
A sweet, therapeutic soundtrack
This is from seeing show#3. In one sentence: A predictable yet overall pleasant play out of a grandson learning about his grandma. In three sentences: you have to go see this show if you connect positively with identifying as a grandchild or grandparent. Due to the show’s trying-to-say-too-much lyricsism and the cast falling a little short from reaching any “wow” moments, the story may not touch on too many universal themes for some to relate to. But as someone who has a 91 year old granny that they love, I needed this show more than I can write in three sentences, so please keep workshopping this as many people need this story more than they know.
Sweet, sweet story
This was a very sweet story. I enjoyed it.
I struggled a bit with "Grandma" being in her 30's/ 40's- but Grandma's vocals were beautiful! I think for future casting it would be lovely to see a senior playing this part.
I liked the paralleled arches of both characters transitioning both into and out of their independence. It was a lovely show.
Don't wear mascara.
You will cry it all off and look like a raccoon. This show made me miss my Grandmas and my early 20s, so it was a lot of feels for a Friday afternoon. Lovely music and script, great use of the space, and excellent, grounded performances by both actors. Special shout out to the woman who played the Grandma. It's difficult to play someone so far outside your age range without relying on certain stereotypes or gimmicks. I was so impressed by the heart you brought to this role. You played it beautifully. Thank you all for beautiful theatrical experience!
Heartfelt Story
I, too, entered "Write Me Letter"with my memories of Grandma. Some sadness, some laughs. At times, a little much, and my sceptical contrived mode captured my brain. Great transitions with"dialog," switching between song and say.
P.S. Please George.... and I say this with constructive criticism; enough with the bangs...get a trim. That distracted me, but perhaps only me and my post-show- new-buddy.
Cast and Crew
Noah Gundermann
Composer and Actor
Noah Gundermann is a St. Paul based musician and composer. Theater has been a part of his life for years, acting in plays and musicals since grade school. Noah is so thankful for the support of his family and friends, as well as Grace, for bringing so much life to this musical.
