Reinvigorated Shakespeare
This was such a beautifully acted and interesting adaptation! The energy and chemistry of the two actors and the new tension of Romeo and Juliet’s relationship in the liminal afterlife brought the clever script to life with such tenacity. As someone that was a theater kid that got burnt out on Shakespeare relatively young, this piece resurrected The Bard for me and made me interested in its possibilities again! As many others have been pointing out in the reviews, the flow of different forms of writing worked SO well and gave my brain and heart all the tingles. The chalk was brilliant.

Show: Gilda: A Tribute to the Beloved Comedienne Gilda Radner
Venue: Southern Theater
Gilda as Person & Performer
I’m a millennial that didn’t have a chance to see Gilda Radner live on SNL, but when streaming services became a thing I watched all the old seasons of SNL and fell in love with Gilda as a performer. Seeing Gilda’s characters brought to life live was a gift. Hearing more about Gilda’s personal life interwoven into the wonderful character re-enactments by Helena made for an interesting and nuanced lens into Gilda as a person and performer, as well as how those two identities of hers intertwined. If you love Gilda, you’ll love this show. If you don’t know about Gilda, this show will leave you with a greater understanding of humor as truth and coping.

Happy Camper 🏕️
This show was a riot! It had so many of my favorite flavors; nostalgic, queer, bright and hilariously spooky. There were so many fun details in the costuming, props and overall design (the iPod shuffle on the backpack strap 🎶 The butterfly clips 🦋) and I also loved the goofy, gory elements. The cast complimented each other well and gave a very committed performance. The puppetry was a pure delight! This show even had me researching Rosalie Barrow Edge post performance, what a babe.

Show: DOLLY WHO?
Venue: Rarig Center Xperimental
I want to see more of Dolly’s World!
This show spoke to my creative soul. I loved the process based approach and the zooming out and zooming into our humanity through sweetness and absurdity. The interdisciplinary use of dope drawings made for an ultra cool and unique show experience. Right after the show I saw a squirrel outside and I could’ve sworn it was running towards a tree with a paint brush in tow. Many thanks to Dolly for creating and adding another magical lens to our shared existence ✨

Show: Big Dad Energy

Heart & Humor
Jamie Campbell delivered so much sincerity, heart, and humor in an hour. His longer form bits made for simultaneous excellent comedy and storytelling. His crowd interaction was fun-loving and he truly brought all the best dad energy. The songs were a sweet bonus and the emotional flow of the piece left me tearing up from laughing and from genuine emotion.

Wonderfully Woven
This show both resonated with me and inspired me as an audience member and performer. The classic, yet refreshingly adapted stories were beautifully woven into a larger relational story between the two characters that made me see new angles on my own self and relational understanding. I was emotionally moved and transported and the chemistry and commitment was powerful. Much gratitude.
