Company: Cora Casper
Show: INSOMNIA DOGS
Venue: Mixed Blood

Delightful, well-considered

I love love love how they captured the sweet, youthful joy and stupidity of young adulthood. I know they made something special, because I left the theater wanting to mother them and just continue observing where life takes them. Absolutely one of my favorite shows of the festival, and I’ll be looking forward to future works.

Company: Michael Quadrozzi
Show: Against My Will
Venue: Rarig Nolte Xperimental Theatre

ACE comedy and emotions

Always nice to be seen and to see art made by a fellow member of the mama trauma squad. Very heartfelt, great impressions, and even pretty funny at times. Thanks, Michael. I’m glad you’re here and grateful for your show.

Company: The Church of Ratology
Show: Rat Mass
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre

a miraculous experience

you must attend rat mass.

Company: Scarlett d. Jones
Show: The Year of Sluttery
Venue: Open Eye Theatre

Delightful, start to finish (!!!)

Scarlett’s stories were delightful, raucous, and riotous! There’s a certain innate funniness to hearing about one’s sexual awakening and such sexcapades, but what really stood out to me was the heart and empathy Scarlett imbued her show with. Even when we were having a laugh or cringing out of our skin at the things men do, she never failed to speak with kindness and address the difficulties involved in senior dating for folks of all stripes, without letting any of them off the hook. A joyous show and well worth the watch.

Company: Sophia R.B. White
Show: White Noises
Venue: Open Eye Theatre

Wow, bold, sincere, intimate

I loved this solo show. A lot of solo pieces rely on a certain amount of artifice to keep an audience enthralled for the duration. Sophia, however, captivated me as an audience with her raw intimacy and excellent staging choices. From her heartfelt emotional moments, pretty princess ideations, and perfectly captured doomscroll sessions, I was with her the whole ride. I even gasped at a certain reveal. I was going to give this 5 kitties before the incredibly powerful ending, and that only cemented its perfect thesis.

Company: an alleged Theatre Company
Show: The Temporary Tattoo Trio
Venue: Rarig Kilburn Theatre

chutzpah and love

Welp, I didn’t think this show would make me cry, but here we are. Blast to watch, and what a bold ending. The Tylers and their temporary tattoos are midwives that have delivered me into the world as a brand new lifelong alleged theatre company convert.

Company: Comfort Zone
Show: Comfort Zone Presents: CHEMISTRY
Venue: Theatre in the Round

authentic, zany goofballs

This was absolutely one of the more ridiculous fringe shows/displays of improv. Didn’t stop me from cackling like a hyena the whole time. Came off as zanier, obviously less polished than “fringe titans/veterans,” but I honestly found it more entertaining and authentic than those by magnitudes. You don’t like these young, funny artists, you’re the problem. Excited to see Ping Prov on Thursday.

Company: Deconstructing Directing
Show: Director's Cut: Where Play Becomes Magic
Venue: Rarig Kilburn Theatre

validating breath of fresh air

more a class than a show, this provided some really nice insight into the directorial process. also very validating to see my own experiences with directing and its lack of training / structured in-roads to the process reflected and sympathized with. perfect kind of experience for fringe. even better, the director provides a vibrant community and comprehensive resources on all kinds of elements of the process on their website, which I will definitely be frequenting into the future.

Company: Rajan Khatiwada
Show: Curly Hair Boy
Venue: Rarig Kilburn Theatre

delightful puppetry, universal storytelling

I don't speak or understand a word of Nepali, but I didn't need to to get so much out of this show. The actors were all delightful in their physicality, and as a fellow puppeteer, I can wholeheartedly say they had top-tier puppetry. I absolutely loved the uniqueness and charm attached to literally every puppet, the musicality of the hedgehogs being a particular favorite. I also didn't know anything about the story of Hetchhakuppa prior to this show, but I found it a good entry point and was excited to look into it more on my own afterward.
