Company: Alisa Rosenthal
Show: Big Honor Student Energy
Venue: Open Eye Theatre

Win the lottery with this one

Alisa was not at all thrown by the small 10 PM Monday night audience; she was so good, it was if she were performing for a sold out show. She brought super high energy and enthusiasm along with a humorous intimacy about her career journey. This gal's show is a winner.

Company: Comfort Zone
Show: Comfort Zone Presents: CHEMISTRY
Venue: Theatre in the Round

High energy improv

Two young talents maximized the space and fed off each other for the full sixty. Real LOL fun.

Company: LandmanLand
Show: A Sad Carousel 2: The Timely Death of Herschel Douscheburg
Venue: Rarig Stoll Thrust Theatre

Nonstop Fringe

Talented cast did not miss a beat or cue in this fast-paced, super fun performance made for Fringe. Minimal props and costuming let the performers shine and work off each other with expressive reactions all while delivering a catchy well-written script with the occasional improvisational remark. As a previous reviewer noted, this one deserves a crowd. Butts in seats? Yes, go!

Company: Wheeler In The Sky
Show: In The Garden Of American Heroes
Venue: The Southern Theatre

The acting, the story, the costuming!

Top notch on all fronts. Be prepared to pay attention and be engaged for a full 60, learning details about Custer with context. A true narrative by a real professional.

Company: Kalal Productions
Show: GUNS! the Musical
Venue: Theatre in the Round

Action-packed

For a show about guns, there wasn't a ton about guns specifically. Rather, this was a polished, original play about people and differences of opinions with an occasional song/music (live band!). Kudos to the playwright for some great script scenes and one-liners and to the performers -- who all committed to their characters -- which altogether made it a fun Fringe-y watch.

Company: Deconstructing Directing
Show: Director's Cut: Where Play Becomes Magic
Venue: Rarig Kilburn Theatre

All You Ever Wanted to Know About Directing...

but were afraid to ask. This show is a show about how directors do their job and we witness it firsthand as Andrew works with thespians who've been given a fresh script -- chosen by the audience. We start by watching a cold read and then see Andrew do his magic of telling the performers to double down on their blocking intuition and build arcs of emotion in their vocalization. Background: Andrew offers community theater directors access to a bounty of training through his work. This "class" was an entertaining stroll through the process as we witness a mini play within a Fringe performance. Fun concept. Talent on display.

Company: THE MOTH PROJECT
Show: THE MOTH PROJECT
Venue: Red Eye Theater

A feast for the eyes and ears

An immersive experience with bright, projected video and live music. And story. It reminded me of what you might [typically] see as part of the Walker Art Center's "Out There" performance series. I caught the show as the last of my schedule for the day and it was the perfect way to top off the evening. Fringers should note that the venue (2213 Snelling, Mpls) is right off Franklin and very close to the West Bank cluster of venues -- not as far away as it might "feel." I arrived in plenty of time for the show, miscalculating how close Red Eye now is. There's a parking lot out front and plenty of street parking so don't let the location deter you from seeing this polished, entertaining, relaxing & enjoyable show.

Company: Steven Nicholas
Show: Mind Reader
Venue: Rarig Nolte Xperimental Theatre

Blew my mind

At some point you stop being dumbfounded by how Steven does what he does and you sit back and relax and enjoy being amazed. Super professional and engaging. He's worth a sell-out at every slot. Go.

Company: Duluth Improv
Show: Duluth: An Improvised Midwest Murder
Venue: Rarig Nolte Xperimental Theatre

Right on target, don't you know

Was super pleasantly surprised to see this troupe of talented improvisors keep the prompt scenario going for the FULL HOUR -- same performers, multiple scenes and characters -- with a cohesively built story and subplots, all wrapped up with a nice finish. Best of all, this troupe knows its MN-humor despite a home base in the south.

Company: Dogdog-Beardog
Show: Ranger Jim
Venue: Rarig Kilburn Theatre

Three true tales, each one better than the last

Jim shared that he decided to tell these stories to emphasize the beauty and possibilities of our national parks and forests -- which are under threat on many fronts. For me, the stories remind us of our interconnectedness to one other. The power of nature to inspire awe is incredible but pales to the love in spirit that we hold for our dear families. Jim's telling of three experiences while a ranger at three different parks bring to light all of it. Superbly done. This one's a must-see!
