Company: Nightfall Productions
Show: Fargo Allegro
Venue: Rarig Center Thrust
A Condensed Version of the Movie+++
Paul Bunyan for a narrator, violin & harp soundtrack, cheeky foleywork, thoughtful stagehands, and a homespun projection screen - an uplifted version of the film and then some!
Company: Rail Time Productions
Show: Rails!
Venue: Rarig Center Xperimental
Crass, But Well-Written
Better as a cable TV sitcom pilot than a Fringe production.
Company: Luma Notti
Show: ABSURDITY: a burlesque experience
Venue: Rarig Center Thrust
Uplifting, Baudy, and Inspiring
Creative, captivating, glitzy vignettes that speak loud and proud about pleasure & self-expression, no matter the size, shape, or set of fun bits that someone has.
Company: Lady Chamberlain Productions
Show: 4 Bisexuals and 2 Guys Named John Kill Dracula
Venue: Rarig Center Arena
Real, Funny, and Well-thought-out
Earnest dialogue, real connections and cooperation between the cast, cool costumes, giggleworthy .alt witticism. Some deevolution at the end, but that's totally understandable.
Company: Flavorade Foucault
Show: Shark Grant
Venue: Rarig Center Xperimental
Silly & Random
Initially a neat, well-produced concept with a really sleek sideshow before deevolving into mumbly, fast-paced challenges that were hard for the audience to understand. A decent idea, but very piecemeal slapdash at the end.
Company: Wet Splat Productions
Show: 20,000 Leagues Under the Telltale Heart
Venue: Rarig Center Arena
Silly, Nerdy Fun
Complete with radio-serial foleywork, each author gave it their all, perhaps a little too much all, since there was some overlapping yes-and's. Secondly, though it's not a major gaff, shouldn't Twain be attacking with a Missouri Smash, instead of a Mississippi Smash?
Company: Helena K Cosentino
Show: Gilda: A Tribute to the Beloved Comedienne Gilda Radner
Venue: Southern Theater
Kitties Aside, this is a 5-Wig Review!
Crikey, this show was a full whirlwind of emotions - belly laughs, punny humor, sadness, grief, and mirth - all within one awesome biographical singing & dancing production.
Company: Team Rand-McKay
Show: Works in Progress
Venue: Theatre in the Round
Great Cast, Poor HIPAA Compliance
I work in a office with therapists and psychiatrists, so I had to refrain many a twitch, kneejerk, and mrrp when the characters would diagnose someone within a second of meeting them, let alone write about your clients using their real names. Nonetheless, it was a funny show with each cast member pulling their weight, especially Aurora in those impossible heelless heels!
Company: Jackdonkey Productions
Show: Dock Work
Venue: Rarig Center Thrust
A Manifesto + Modern Dance, Capoeira, & Qi Gong
If ever there was a genre of media that combined grunge with beat poetry, this would be it.
Company: Black Lives Black Words International Project
Show: Baldwin's Last Fire
Venue: Theatre in the Round
A Dramatic, Thirst-Quenching Masterpiece
Dual perspectives are presented in equal in greatness and inner fortitude (though, yes, Mr Baldwin is a divine writer) and I never thought so much creativity could flow through satin drapery, copper set pieces, and paper butterflies.
Company: Kyle B. Dekker
Show: Audacious Ignatius: Lost in Atlantis
Venue: Theatre in the Round
History Made Real and Uncanny
Kyle is an excellent orator with a wit like a trip wire that catches you unawares with the quickest bon mots. So much so that I could almost nearly forgive him for bursting my happy aesthete bubble of Oscar Wilde's opinion on the works of Shakespere. Also, calling someone a 'LocoFoco' will soon become my new favorite insult.
Company: Goddard's Gardens
Show: Open Mic at the DREAM Shop
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre
Uplifting, Strong, Emotive
Be it poetry, spoken-word, or lyrics, I came away nurtured and empowered. @thedreamshopmpls
Company: David Stillman
Show: Grindr Help Desk: The Musical
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre
Easily One of My Favorites of the Fringe
You'll laugh, you'll laughsnort, you'll cackle perversely, and you'll fall in adorelove with Candice.
Company: Lady Z Productions
Show: Choose Your Own Fringe Adventure
Venue: Mixed Blood Theatre
Hit or Miss
Aside from the choices that the audience can make to 'choose the adventure' and the characters of Jack and The Stranger being really awesome, this show came off scattered and awkward.
Company: [Un]Qualified
Show: H.G. Wells' THE INVISIBLE MAN
Venue: Southern Theater
Ingenious, Witty, and Suspender-some
Though the role of the Invisible Man remained the same, the other members of the cast went through costume changes, different UK accents, and silhouette shadow play with a breathtaking amount of energy and humor, to boot. My favorite bits were the ones with the telephone, the stairs, and the handcuffs. #clauderains/reins
Company: Mary Willmeng/Willmeng Dances
Show: Little Pieces
Venue: Theatre in the Round
Spellbinding and Supportive
Each vignette brought to mind trees in the wind, the tension between student and teacher, a conjuror, the complexity and drudgery of the unknown, and the support and intercommunication between a group of friends.
Company: Snikt! Bamf!Thwip!
Show: John Wick by Tim Wick (no relation)
Venue: Theatre in the Round
"Welcome to the Continental Hotel: Bemidji!"
Having watched 3 out of the 4 John Wick films, it all rolled out pretty much as they described. I really loved how everyone got a try at donning the John Wick jacket and accent, plus, yup, just about all the shootouts happen at a rave. By the end, laughs turned into nods of agreement & empathy as Tim got to the heart of who John Wick is.
Company: Goof Goof
Show: 101 Goofin' Things
Venue: Theatre in the Round
Oi, Poor Phil
A vast amount of the tasks were in Liv's favor with Phil left to take the brunt of the punishment. Poor fella. At any rate, it was great fun and laughs all-around.
